Second Amendment movement in Central Virginia & Michigan
Over 120 localities across Virginia declared themselves “Second Amendment Sanctuary Cities,” a rapidly growing movement in opposition to gun restrictions proposed by Gov. Ralph Northam and Democratic legislators. The proposals include universal background checks, civil penalties for not reporting lost or stolen firearms to police, reinstating the state’s lapsed one-handgun-a-month law, and giving localities the ability to prohibit the carrying of firearms in a public space during an event that would require a permit. The 2A movement switched into high gear after lawmakers in Virginia passed tighter gun reforms. Several gun rights activists across Michigan communities have followed suit and others are considering other resolutions that are in support of the movement. A growing list of Michigan municipalities are passing “Second Amendment sanctuary” resolutions, affirming gun ownership rights and signaling resistance to proposed gun control legislation.
The purpose of the “Second Amendment Sanctuary” resolution is to declare the counties' intent to honor and defend gun rights, while refusing to enforce any gun control measures that prohibit the Second Amendment or Fourth Amendment rights.
